Urban Decay Revolution Lipstick: Naked Review and Swatches

I must say, I love all my bright and fun lipsticks but there's just something about a nice nude shade.  It's so easy, goes with anything and you usually don't really need a mirror to apply it.  My current nude fav is the Urban Decay Revolution lipstick in Naked.  It's a pinky nude that looks a bit glossy but doesn't have any shimmer or glitter in it (thank god!).  As far as formula goes, Urban Decay hit the nail on the head.  It's nice and creamy with a good color payoff.  I would say they last about a few hours before you would need to reapply, but UD isn't claiming they are long lasting so I think that's pretty standard for a regular lipstick.

The line has a total of 20 shades and because of the beautiful formula of these, I'm sure I'll be picking up a few more shades in the future.  If you're looking for an amazing dark berry shade for fall/winter, I definitely recommend the color "Shame."  It's a really nice deep berry color that I think would look nice on most skintypes.

OPI San Francisco Collection: Incognito in Sausalito and Lost on Lombard

Top: Incognito in Sausalito Bottom: Lost on Lombard
Who doesn't love a new OPI polish?  I recently acquired the above from the brand's new fall line called the San Francisco Collection.  The collection includes 15 colors with San Fran inspired names.  Most of the colors are very fall friendly with a few a couple brighter shades thrown into the mix.

I picked up Lost on Lombard which is a nice red color that is slightly muted making it a great fall polish.  It looks brighter in the swatch than it is in real life.  I apologize for not having actual nail swatches, but hey, a girl gets busy sometimes, ya know?  The color is opaque in two coats and lasted over a week with my trusty Revlon Quick Dry Base Coat and the ever amazing Seche Vite Top Coat.  I wore this color when I was in Texas and didn't have to worry about it chipping throughout the weekend.  I'm basically obsessed with Seche Vite.  Between that and the Target nail polish remover, I no longer hate doing my nails.  They are amazing products.  The end.

The second color I grabbed is Incognito in Sausalito (gotta love OPI for their names if nothing else, right?).  This one is what I would call a midnight blue.  If you see it form a distance, it looks black which may not be some people's cup of tea, but I really like it.  I have this one on as I type and it took two coats to get it opaque and even.  I don't think you could get away with one coat on this one.

In a nut shell, I love this new line from OPI.  It has so many great fall colors whether your into the darker variety or the textured polish that has been having a moment this year.  I have my eye on Keeping Suzie at Bay and It's All San Adrea's Fault.

What fall nail colors will be on your tips this season?

This One's For The (Pale) Girls: Balm Shelter Tinted Moisturizer

You gotta love a good tinted moisturizer, no?  It feels nice and light on the skin and is really easy to apply with your fingers -- what's not to love?  TheBalm was featured on Hautelook.com a little while back and this ended up in my shopping cart.  Balm Shelter comes in three shades, all of which are unfortunately pretty light.  I have the lightest which is pretty pale...so if anyone else is pigment-challenged, this is a really good pick.

I would say this formula is probably better for those with slightly oilier skin as it's not incredibly moisturizing.  If you do have dry skin but want to give it a try, you may need to add a light serum/oil before you put this on to amp up the hydrating factor.  As far as coverage goes, it does a good job of camouflaging slight imperfections and evening out skin tone, but don't expect it to cover up any angry red spots or dark circles resulting from a late night of catching up on last season's shows (Anyone else excited that it's premier season??  It helps soften the blow of loosing Dexter and Breaking Bad at the same time).

All in all I'm really happy with my purchase.  I think my only real gripe would be that it only comes in three very light shades...not so great for all you tanned ladies out there.

Transitioning Into Fall

In Minnesota, it just all of a sudden becomes to fall.  It's like someone flips a switch and the weather and atmosphere instantly change.  Well, this moment happened last week.  In a span of 24 hours, we went from summer to fall.  It's now crisp in the morning and night, I'm noticing more crunchy leaves on the sidewalk and we can have a temperature swing of about 30 degrees throughout the course of the day.  Even though fall is bittersweet as it means that winter is just around the corner, it is a particularly great fashion season.  Who doesn't love scarves, riding boots and comfy sweaters?  I'm slowly starting to incorporate fall items such as this leather (well, who are we kidding, fake leather) dress and my fav green scarf.  I just had to hold on to the flip flops for one more week though....it's all about slowly transitioning, right?  Okay -- I just realized you can't see my shoes in any of these pictures...but yes, they are brown flip flops.  And now they are being retired for the next 6 months (seriously...isn't that sad!?).

Review: Tarte Amazonian Blush and Glamazon Lipstick

About a month or so ago, one of my favorite sample sale websites, Hautelook, had a Tarte Cosmetics sale.  Since I absolutely love my Tarte Aqualillies palette, and have heard a million good things about Tarte, I knew I had to break out the wallet and pick up a few things.  I've had my eye on the Amazonian 12-Hour Clay Blushes and the Glamazon lipsticks and luckily the sale included a few shades of both of those items.

First up, the blush.  I got it in the shade "empowered" which I'm pretty sure was a shade that was featured on QVC and is on the Tarte website for only $18 (compared to the usual $26).  It's a really nice pink shade (with a hint of peach) that has a little shimmer running through it.  In the pan, it looks like it is pretty glittery but that doesn't really translate onto the cheeks (which is great...I'm not all about that glittery cheek look).  I think it would look nice on most skin tones but if you have really dark skin it may not show up very well.

Last but not least (can you really say that when you're only talking about two things?  I'm just going to go with it) the Glamazon lipstick in Fierce.  Fierce is a bright red with a bit of an orange undertone.  The formula is so nice and creamy.  The swatch above is only one swipe so it's really pigmented as well.  Overall, a really nice and fun red that will last for hours...which makes it a win in my book!  I think it would look really nice with subtle eye shadow and a thicker black eye liner, maybe with a little flick, I don't know, just throwing it out there.  That's pretty much how I envision every red lip ha.  Ah well, nothing if not consistent, right?

Have you tried Tarte products?  Which ones are your favorite?

3.1 Phillip Lim for Target

Every fashion loving girl's heart skipped a beat when Target announced they would be doing designer collaborations.  The most recent of the aforementioned collaborations launched on Sunday.  The Phillip Lim for Target line is probably the most anticipated team up since Missoni.  I've never been a real fan of Missoni (sorry, but it's just not my bag baby.  I feel like an Austin Powers reference is appropriate when referencing Missoni, so there ya go) so I was pretty excited for the arrival of Phillip Lim on September 15.

First off, I had a major fail when getting to the store on Sunday morning.  I had looked up the time my local Target opened and thought it was 10 am.  When I got to the store, I saw people going in and out and it was a few minutes before it was supposedly supposed to open.  Well, turns out the store I looked up was the downtown store which opened at 10 and the store I went to opened at 8...so I'm not sure what items were sold out by the time I arrived.  I'm guessing the smaller purses were sold out since I only saw the large ones.  There also were no trenches left, none of the black and white abstract print dresses/tops along with a slew of other things, however there were also not any racks for those items so I'm not sure if they were ever there.  The world will never know.

I tried on a few different items (this is shocking because I detest trying on clothes...but I was trying to cut down on any impulse buying since I had already had a little splurge at Sephora/The Body Shop earlier in the weekend) and decided on the navy skirt, the navy/green sweater and the large tote.  I tried on a few other things that didn't work for one reason or another.  I'm pretty happy with what I ended up with since I was needing some more pieces that are work friendly and the two I liked ended up making a cute little outfit (I can practically hear a couple of my friends laughing since they think I always do this without trying...but I think it's just because I usually gravitate towards the same color when on a shopping excursion).

Unfortunately, my wallet wouldn't allow me to pick up everything I wanted but as I said, I'm happy with with I got.  I'm also happy I was able to get anything considering I got to the store two hours after they opened.  Oops.

Did you pick up any items from the Phillip Lim for Target line?  What are your favorite pieces?

What's Your Fall Jacket Style?

Fall Jackets

Leather Moto Jacket from Danier- a little twist on a classic leather jacket
Hive and Honey Military Coat - a great military inspired option
Navy Coat by Oscar de la Renta - let's be honest, this one is just for fun.  But it's beautiful.
Banana Republic Trench - apparently this exact one isn't available on the Banana site anymore but the link is to a similar style
Ricki's Shawl Collar Blazer- if you live in a warmer climate, a blazer is a great way to incorporate a fall "jacket" without being too much

What kind of jacket do you have your eye on for fall?

Little Tid Bits From Texas

I was in Texas over Labor Day weekend to celebrate a friend's bridal shower and bachelorette party.  Here's a little collage of the weekend starting with the Benefit Cosmetics vending machine at the airport!  I know these are popping up all over, but it's still exciting to see one.

Beauty Tip Tuesday #8

This is more of a fashion tip than a beauty tip, but I'm hoping you'll let it slide.  As someone who's a few inches taller than the average woman (fun fact, the average height of an American woman is roughly 5 ft. 4 in.), when I buy a maxi dress there's usually no extra length to accommodate shrinking.  And, if you're lazy like me, I'm not going to hand wash my maxis.

In order to make sure you don't end up with a tea length dress, the process is two fold.  The first is the most obvious, don't put it in the dryer.  Secondly, when you take it out of the washing machine, put it on a hanger and let it air dry (making sure the bottom of the dress isn't touching the ground).  I've had dresses that looked like they shrank a good 8 inches but once I hung them and let them dry, they were as good as new.  The weight of the water moves towards the bottom of the dress, stretching the fabric back to it's normal length.

What are your tips and tricks for taking care of your clothes?

Fall Booties for Every Occasion

Fall Booties

Even though I by no means am ready for the freezing weather of winter, I'm excited to take my fall items out of storage and being able to layer without immediately needing to strip when stepping outside.  Nothing finishes off the perfect fall outfit like a good bootie (not to be confused with the right booty.....yeah....).  These members of the shoe family come in all styles and colors and can literally be worn with anything.  I particularly like them with a good pair of skinnies and a cute top.  Although, anything can look good with skinnies and a cute top, let's be honest.

Here are the four that I have my eye on and how I would style them (clockwise from left):

Betsy Johnson Camper Bootie
Try with dark skinny jeans black v-neck tee with a long necklace or a sassy black dress.    Yes, sassy.

Michael Antonio Mayer Bootie
An A-line skirt with a structured shirt and some fun tights.

Me Too Legacy Women's Ankle Bootie
Anything.  Seriously, anything.

Zigi Soho Guerrilla Combat Bootie
A pair of well lived in jeans, a slouchy tee shirt and scarf.

What fall items are you looking forward to wearing?

The Amazing Maxi

This one is just for your amusement :)

Photog Credit: Katy Dew Photography

So I realize the title of this post sounds like a bad super hero and/or pad commercial but let's just roll with it.  You gotta love a good maxi dress.  By throwing on one piece of clothing you can instantly look effortlessly put together.  Who doesn't love that?

Even though fall is upon us, there's still some good maxi wearing days ahead.  This particular one is from Target which, by the way, has a lot of maxis on sale at the moment.  Just throwing that out there for ya.  If it's starting to get a little cooler where you're living, you can give your dress an extended life by throwing a long sleeve tee or sweater over the top and switching out the flip flops for some cute flats (like these! which would be particularly cute with a navy maxi).

What are your tips for extending wear on your summer clothing items?

Beauty Tip Tuesday #7: Long-lasting Blush

Minus those mornings when a cozy bed and the snooze button are just too tempting, I enjoy putting on some makeup as part of my morning routine.  However, if you're anything like me, you want to put it on and not be bothered to have to reapply later on in the day.  I always have good intentions by throwing in my lipstick or powder in my bag, but let's face it, they end up just sitting there.  With that said, long-lasting makeup is key to being able to apply and forget about it.  Here's how to get blush that will last all day without fading.

Once you've applied your foundation/BB/CC/whatever your base may be, you'll want to use a cream blush.  A good drugstore one is made by NYX and is available at Ulta.  If you're feeling crazy and want to try a more high end product, the Josie Maran Cheek Gelees are a great choice.  Use your fingers or a stippling brush (like the one from Real Techniques) to apply the cream blush.  Then, use a powder blush in a similar color to pop over the top.  This really helps set everything and makes it last literally all day.  Tarte makes an amazing blush but if you're looking for something a little more budget friendly, Milani Baked Blush and Physicians Formula Happy Booster blushes are good options.
