The other day, someone told me that they hate to buy trendy clothes because they felt like it was a waste of money. After all, you only wear them for a season or two and then they fall victim to the back of the closet, right? I can understand the frustration of wanting to look like someone who has style without having to completely replace your wardrobe every season. The great thing about the fashion world is that if you invest in some really quality, classic pieces they will never go out of style. A classic piece has the ability to withstand the trends. They are also easily transformed with a few inexpensive items in order to look trendy without spending the money (think a statement necklace, great belt or a beautiful print scarf). With that said, here's my list of top ten items that every woman should have in her closet:
1. Good Pair of Jeans
A good pair of jeans will never go out of style. While I'm loving the colored jean trend that's happening right now, I don't expect my mint pair to stand the test of time. I would suggest getting a darker wash in either a boot cut or a slim leg like this straight leg pair made by Gap or these also by Gap.
2. Classic Cut Blazer
Blazers can go a long way in a wardrobe. They can be worn in any season and can be as dressy or casual as necessary. While they are "trendy" blazers (hello, tuxedo cut) I would stick with a classic cut like this one from Banana Republic (although this item is more expensive than I would usually recommend, a quality closet staple is worth it as it will last from season to season. If you're still uncomfortable with the price tag, I would suggest looking at Gap or New York and Company for a more budget friendly alternative). As far as color goes, you can't go wrong with black or white. If you are only going to have one, I would say go black!
3. Flattering Dress (in solid color)
I'm using the broad description of "flattering dress" because everyone has a different shape and not everything looks amazing on that shape. So, if you're comfortable with your body and like to show it off, I would go with something a little more fitted like this sheath from Ann Taylor. If you're not comfortable in body concious styles, try this Banana Republic dress that has a more fluid skirt. The key to a dress that's a closet staple is choosing a semi-neutral color (I say semi-neutral because you can have a brighter color, just make sure it's not a trendy color like a neon) and making sure you feel beautiful in it. If you feel great, you'll want to wear it!
4. Little Black Dress
An LBD is probably THE closet staple for every woman. It should be different from the non-LBD described above (you should go with a different neutral for your non-LBD so you get more mileage out of your closet) but with the same rules. Buy something that flatters your shape and that you feel amazing in. A couple that I love are this one from Gap and this LBD from Ann Taylor.
5. Button Down Dress Shirt
For the classic button down, you can't go wrong with Gap's perfect oxford shirt. White is probably the most versatile as far as these shirts go, however I think the blue would also be a great choice.
6. Pencil Skirt
Pencil skirts can be worn in so many different situations. Whether you're going to work, a bridal shower or out on a date night, a pencil skirt can easily adapt. Again, neutral colors are best, but if you always gravitate towards a specific color, don't hesitate to add it in! A pencil skirt is also a great way to add some texture to an outfit such as this amazing sequin version by Calvin Klein. I must admit, if you go this route it is a lot less versatile, but I just had to add it in because it's so fun! Here is a more practical piece by Michael Kors.
7. Close Toe Pumps
I absolutely love a close toe pump. They literally go with everything. If you're daring, you can go with a 4 inch heel or if you like being more grounded, opt for a shorter heeled version. As for color, black and nude are the best for lasting through the seasons. This is a great and affordable option from Madden Girl that comes in many colors.
A classic style sweater is also a must have. I would suggest opting for a lighter weight fabric so it can easily transition between seasons. Even if you live in a cold climate (like me!) you can wear a blazer over a light weight sweater in the winter and easily wear it on a cool night by itself in the summer months. This J. Crew version is a great choice and comes in a good range of colors. I also love this cashmere version if you're looking for a splurge.
Flats are particularily popular for this season, although you can never go wrong with a good flat. Whether it's a day of shopping or running around the city, flats are a great way to give your feet a break. A couple I love are these and these.
10. Leather Bag
Last but not least, a leather bag! If you're willing to splurge, I love the shape (and not to mention quality) of this Kate Spade. Otherwise, here's a more affordable version from Audrey Brooke at DSW.
